Column failure modes differ generally because of their height variation. Long column failure pattern is totally differ from that of short column. Consider the two columns made of the same material and are of same cross sections.
- By observing failure pattern, one can see that short column fails because of crushing of the material or of material yielding. From the figure, one can observe failure mode indicated with dashed line
2. In case of long column, failure pattern is totally different. Column generally fails because of buckling that happens because of compression of the long column. Column buckles before yield point.
